How to begin
Genealogical research is usually conducted through the birth (or baptism) and marriage records of the person(s) whose family you wish to back-trace.
Through these official records we know who the parents are, the place of birth/marriage and we calculate the (approximate) dates at which those events occurred. More often than not, these records provide such information as profession, address and relationship of the people involved.

Research models

Generally, we recommend an initial search spanning 5 generations. This type of research allows for a broad and quite complete view of one’s family tree and allows the client to initiate their search in ample fashion, without excessive cost.
This is a complete, or almost complete search of all relations both on the mother’s and on the father’s side up to the fifth generation of the person where the search started. This helps limit costs (see here) and enables any client wishing to pursue the search to choose which branches are most interesting.
If a client wishes a
different type of search, Linhagens will gladly provide a cost estimate for the
necessary services. For an isolated register, we suggest you contact the
Direcção-Geral de Registos and Notariado (usually for records until 1910), or
district archives.
What to expect

After the search, a final report, called Genealogical Certification, will be drafted. This report will describe the branches or family names researched and all remaining elements collated in the course of the search glean.
This Certification will include a copy of all documents found (municipal registry of births, marriages and deaths and parish records) with a mention of their origin and reference number, as well as schematic trees in order to better visualize the results.
The Certification will be sent by post or email, as per the clients request.
